"Kicking" off a fun weekend with Iowa Hawkeyes Soccer

On Friday evening, I adventured from West Des Moines over to Iowa City to take in an Iowa Hawkeyes versus Penn State Nittany Lions women's soccer game.

This was my first visit to the very nice soccer complex at the University of Iowa and, from what I can recall, my first ever women's college soccer game.

It was unseasonably warm but I greatly enjoyed the company of my brother and niece and nephew.

I was impressed by the quantity of fans in the crowd, which included many young families. It probably helps that admission is free! That's a stark contrast to the cost to attend, for example, and Iowa Hawkeyes football game.

Concessions were available and at halftime, some local youth got to play on the field, which no doubt helps bring some fans to the stands. Because of the set up of the complex, there are a lot of nice hills which allows the young kids to have some fun creating grass stains as they roll on down.

Admittedly, I never really played soccer growing up nor consider it must-see TV when it is broadcast. That said, the game moves quickly with its continuous clock and the lively pace of activity on the field.

The Hawkeyes lost 1-0 but the nice weather and inexpensive cost to attend probably helped lessen the blow of the game's outcome for the fans.

As always, I welcome your suggestions of places to visit and profile whether in Johnson County or any of the other 98 counties in Iowa. If you have a good idea or would like to host the Iowa Adventurer, please drop me a note through this site.
