Every year, the University of Iowa Athletics Department has an "ANF" (America Needs Farmers) game to recognize and celebrate the enormous impact that agriculture plays in each our lives...literally every day.
If you are unfamiliar with the ANF story, it was started during the Farm Crisis of the 1980s by legendary Iowa coach Hayden Fry. I would encourage you to read more about it on the ANF website.
My employer, the Iowa Farm Bureau, sponsors the ANF game every year. The University of Iowa and Iowa Farm Bureau partner on a lot of great projects, including donating proceeds of ANF apparel sales to the food banks in Iowa.
It's a great excuse for this die hard Iowa State Cyclones fan to make the pilgrimage to "historic" Kinnick Stadium for a game.
This year's game was against the #4 ranked Penn State Nittany Lions. Penn State has been embroiled in controversy and scandal the past several years yet they still managed to land Saquon Barkly, one of the top college football players in the nation. Barkley, based on his performance thus far, is certainly one of the current front runners for the Heisman Trophy.
It was a great game and I think the fans got their money's worth. I have to admit, the atmosphere was quite electric!
It came down to the last play and Penn State managed to score a touchdown as time expired...to deal Iowa its first loss of the season.
Clearly, America Needs Farmers and the Hawkeyes needed one more defensive stop!
I have plenty of friends who are Hawkeyes fans and I let them know that losing in heartbreaking fashion once in awhile at least lets them experience what Cyclones fans experience regularly.
All in all, a great Saturday with a friend on one of the warmest days of the year.
As always, I welcome your suggestions of places to visit and profile whether in Johnson County or any of the other 98 counties in Iowa. If you have a good idea or would like to host the Iowa Adventurer, please drop me a note through this site.
