On a recent Sunday afternoon trip back to West Des Moines from Lucas County in southern Iowa, I drove through Indianola and thought I would look for somewhere local to get a cup of coffee.
Instead of going to Google, I just started heading toward Simpson College in hopes of finding a fun or trendy local coffee shop that might be popular with college students.
A few blocks up the street from Simpson, I didn't find "trendy" - I found something even better. I found "classic", "nostalgic", and "old fashioned" at The Corner Sundry on the town square.
Open for business since 1949, The Corner Sundry offers old fashioned ice cream and sodas, along with coffee, candies, sandwiches, and more. I love these kinds of classic places that seem relatively untouched by time and offer a kind of nostalgic character that is lacking in many newer places these days.
The friendly soda jerk (it's a real term, I'm not trying to be mean!) convinced me to not only get a cup of coffee - but also try one of their shakes, as they are famous locally for their ice cream. I had some fresh espresso mixed in, and it was quite delicious.
I stopped in late in the afternoon on a Sunday, not too long before it was slated to close. There is ample seating and so I am guessing it is far busier at other times throughout the week.
It might be easier and maybe even quicker to stop somewhere like a Starbucks or a convenience store to get a quick cup of java. However, by doing that you would miss out on discovering a true local gem like The Corner Sundry.
