Linden Street Coffeehouse gives Lamoni a true college town hangout

Last Saturday afternoon I rolled into Lamoni after wandering my way through parts of Madison, Union, Clarke, and Decatur Counties.

Since I am a big coffee fan and needed a bit of a pick-me-up before exploring Lamoni, I drove to the downtown area and spotted what I thought was a coffee shop. Indeed, my suspicions were true - that business was the Linden Street Coffeehouse and it was exactly the kind of place I was hoping to find.

The building is like any 100+ year old commercial space that is found in small towns all throughout Iowa. However, they have added an attractive yellow awning that really jumps out at you.

Once inside, you find a cozy space that contains an eclectic mix of seating options and tables as well as gorgeous hardwood floors. Since Lamoni is home to Graceland University, and their 1000+ students and faculty, this place has the kind of vibe that is really appealing to that demographic. Truly, when you think about what sorts of places would be in a small liberal arts college town, Linden Street is exactly what comes to my mind.

There is an area where musicians can set up to play live music.

It wouldn't be a college town coffee shop without flyers and notices for upcoming events and opportunities.

I was impressed that they had a lot of different pieces of artwork adorning the walls, all for sale, and presumably created by local artists.

Other than beverages, they also serve food and even have a nice lunch menu. I showed up after their kitchen was closed, but there is a wide array of options, including a showcase full of some very delicious looking sweet treats.

Clearly, one of the marks of a confident coffee shop, is their willingness to sell their own beans. There were also other items for sale, including merchandise branded by the coffeehouse.

I bought a coffee drink to go and it was done exceptionally well. I even asked for it to be hotter than usual and the friendly barista nailed it.

If you are in Lamoni or traveling I-35 between Des Moines and Kansas City and are willing to drive a mile or two off the highway for some well above average coffee, it's definitely worth a stop. There's a lot to see in Lamoni and the surrounding Decatur County area and you could easily do a full weekend here. I'll share some other adventure ideas in upcoming posts.

As always, I welcome your suggestions of places to visit and profile whether in Decatur County or any of the other 98 counties in Iowa. If you have a good idea or would like to host the Iowa Adventurer, please drop me a note through this website.
