I always love going into thrift stores because there is usually something fun to be found - and at a great price. Between a recent stop for lunch at Rodney's Kitchen in Waterloo and a visit to the Little Brown Church in the Vale outside of Nashua, as well as several other small towns in Northeast Iowa, I paid a visit to two great thrift stores in Evansdale: Consignments and More as well as Jules' 2nd Hand Hub.
At nearly 4,800 people, according to the last census, Evansdale is a "suburb" of Waterloo. It definitely has a blue-collar and industrial vibe to it. I drove around a bit and found quite a few businesses and some quality middle class neighborhoods.
The first stop was "Consignments & More", which was relatively busy on this particular Saturday afternoon.
I'm not sure whether this was Dustin or Debra, but there were a few of these manikin heads throughout the store.
Post Easter - this particular "peeps" t-shirt was priced to sell.
Elsewhere, the store was stocked with merchandise that is pretty standard of any thrift store. I found several rooms of furniture, tchotzchkes, kitchen wares, books, antiques, music, clothing, decorations, and more.
I nearly bought this humorous step-stool to take back to West Des Moines, but decided against it.
All in all, this is a fun stop and I am sure, like most thrift stores, there's always new merchandise coming through the doors. Check out Consignments and More and give them a follow on Facebook.
Down the road, I found another thrift store that also had many cars in the parking lot. Jules' 2nd Hand Hub had prices that were a little higher but their merchandise selection also might have been curated a little more, too.
There were a number of rooms that were filled with quality items, including the bases for a couple of mission style lamps and a nice mission style buffet. I am always a fan of mission style furniture. It's timeless.
As you can see in the above pictures, this entire store was full of shoes and other footwear, clothes, and even handbags.
This appeared to be a nice drum set but there was also some nice mid-century modern furniture, which is pretty hot right now.
My visit was between a couple of the April snowstorms that attacked Iowa in the last few weeks and so this particular sign was unfortunately way too true.
Next time you are in the Waterloo area and have some time to kill, drop on over to Evansdale and check out their various retail businesses. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised by the potential treasures to be discovered. Check out Jules' 2nd Hand Hub on Facebook and give them a like.
