The old saying goes that if you find yourself in a pickle, you are in a difficult situation or a scenario without an easy answer.
If you find yourself in Pickles Pub in Kamrar, Iowa, you will be in a delicious, popular, and happenin' Hamilton County establishment that you will certainly be glad to be in.
After an epic day of adventuring in Wright and Winnebago Counties on a recent Saturday, I met up with a couple of friends at Pickles Pub to enjoy a pizza before hitting the road for West Des Moines. My party of three had to wait a bit because it was very crowded. Many of the patrons had just come from Hilton Coliseum in Ames and were celebrating Iowa State's victory over the Kansas Jayhawks.
Pickles is known for their pizza but they have a much broader menu too. It's in line with what you would expect at a popular rural Iowa restaurant.
The three of us split a large bacon cheeseburger pizza but did not finish it. We got a box for leftovers. It was outstanding.
Later this week, they are having a four day celebration to commemorate 10 years in business. I am sure it will be a lot of fun.
The population of Kamrar is only about 200.
It is heartening to see a place of this caliber being so well supported. It goes to show that if you do what you do well, you can make a go of it about anywhere.
I always know a place is going to be good when there is a bulletin board near the entrance that is full of business cards and other announcements. That tells me it's popular and a place where the community is prone to gather.
I look forward to getting back to check out Kamrar again in the daytime to see more of the town and to stop back to see what else I can enjoy on the menu at Pickles.
