Passing through Sulphur Springs, an unincorporated town in Buena Vista County
On the way back to West Des Moines from a visit to my parents' farm in O'Brien County, I made a brief stop to check out Sulphur Springs in Buena Vista County. Sulphur Springs? I'd be curious to know how the community got it's name. Was there/is there a spring nearby that contains sulphur or its compounds?
Sulphur Springs is not an incorporated community but it is home to a few homes, a Landus Cooperative location, and there is a set of railroad tracks that pass along the north side of the community.

The community is located between Storm Lake, a town of about 10,000, and Newell, a community with just under 900 residents. It's about a ten minute drive to Storm Lake and it's only a few miles off of Highway 71, a well traveled north and south route in our state.

Landus Cooperative is one of the largest cooperatives in our state and they have a location here.

The Chicago Central Railroad runs along the north side of town.

Some of the roads have some pavement and some are just gravel.

I found a few nice single family dwellings. The population certainly does not exceed more than 50, I wouldn't think.

There are a few other structures in town that are in varying stages of use and condition. Most appear to be either be used as storage or for agricultural purposes.

This was a quick stop just to check out the community. Driving to and from northwest Iowa over the years, I was well aware of the existence of this place but had never stopped. I'm glad I finally did. There's a lot more to see and do in Buena Vista County so I'll be sure to stop back again soon.
