Though it launched in 2018 and is thus still very much a new business by most standards, S&B Farms Distillery is already expanding it's footprint to keep up with demand of its popular distilled spirits. The Kossuth County business is, as they put it in the own words on their website, "Committed to excellence in every drop of spirit that we produce. While we are a first-generation distillery, we have done our homework to provide unique products that best reveal our brand to those who drink spirits."
Previously, Iowa Adventurer visited Bancroft, known as "The Garden Spot of Iowa", on a Sunday afternoon in August of 2019 but the distillery was not open. Following the publishing of my original post on Bancroft, I received a kind e-mail from the City Director letting me know of a few places I needed to stop back to see...including S&B Farms Distillery.
Thus, last fall, Iowa Adventurer visited the distillery and met up with a friend who is a native of Bancroft. S&B's building is on the east end of Bancroft's Main Street business district. According to their website, it was once a dentist office and doctor's clinic. They completely gutted the building to create the perfect space.
They've already had to add on to the building in order to keep up with business growth.
There's a nice sign in front of the building thanking veterans for their service.
Once you walk through the door, you immediately walk into their tasting room. It has a nice industrial feel to it.
From the amazing exposed wooden beam ceiling and pendent lighting to the old bar top counter and reclaimed metal on the front of the counter and above it, this tasting room is a one-of-a-kind space.
There are shelves on either end of the tasting room with merchandise, including the distilled spirits, for sale.
You can buy branded apparel and I certainly appreciate a good pun like the one on the black shirt on the upper left.
There's also some branded drinkware and canvas bags for sale.
Another area of the tasting room had some other products for sale.
The nice guy working this particular afternoon gave my friend and me a few free tastes.
I'm not much of a hard liquor consumer, but S&B is definitely developing a fan base among those who do regularly consume. As they write on their Facebook page, "Our seed-to-spirit distillery starts with grains grown on our very own farm." You can learn more about their multiple offerings on their website.
My friend and I each ended up leaving with a bottle of their Sir Winston Peach. As they describe it on their website, "Sir Winston Peach is so fresh, bright, and deliciously juicy that you’ll be thinking about summer all year long. This sweet, delightful fusion of ripe peach flavors and a hint of vanilla is not only fragrant but savory and smooth."
Summer all year long? Sounds good to me!
Because of COVID protocols, we were not able to check out the distillery area for a tour. However, perhaps in the future that will be an option for visitors.
This year, hopefully with the worst of COVID behind us, they are also spearheading a first annual Bourbon, Brews, and BBQ event scheduled for July 17 in Bancroft. As the announcement notes, "The event has been created to showcase local craft distilleries, breweries, and wineries, promote the appreciation of competition BBQ in a fun-filled environment, and to support our community by donating proceeds of the event to the Bancroft Fire Department so they can purchase updated equipment."
S&B's products are already winning awards in competitions and the business was honored by the Iowa Farm Bureau for their entrepreneurial efforts to help renew rural Iowa. The next time you find yourself in Kossuth County and they are open, be sure to pop in. Or, at a minimum, look for their products on shelves at retailers near you. Over the past decade, we've seen great growth first in wineries and breweries and now distilleries. The craft coffee and local meat movement is not far behind. All of these businesses and budding industries are helping to create jobs and economic vitality across our state and it's great to see S&B Farms find success in Bancroft.
As always, I welcome your suggestions of places to visit and profile whether in Kossuth County or any of the other 98 counties in Iowa. If you have a good idea or would like to host the Iowa Adventurer, please drop me a note through this website.
