Beautiful downtown Cresco far Northeast Iowa is home to many fine businesses amongst its rows of historic old buildings.
One such business is Dough & Joe, a family owned bakery and coffee shop that is churning out delectable sweets, fresh made bread, and excellent coffee beverages five days a week.
Dough & Joe may not be in the coolest building on the block, but there's a good chance it's easily the best smelling.
Iowa Adventurer, on a recent swing through Northeast Iowa, made a stop in Howard County's county seat to grab a cup of coffee and to check out this locally popular small business. Dough & Joe is open Tuesday through Saturday and if you are in Cresco on one of those days, it would be wise to pop in.
I was mostly looking for just a coffee beverage since I had just driven 3 hours on a Saturday morning. However, of course, it's hard to walk into a small town bakery without also sinking your teeth into one of their doughnuts. After all, what's a little joe without also a little dough?
I ordered a Peppermint Mocha coffee beverage and then got a cream filled chocolate frosted long john. I also took home two of their cinnamon rolls to share with my brother the following morning. All of it was memorably delicious.
However, if you just want regular coffee or a loaf of bread, they can meet those needs quite easily.
They even offer their own brand of roasted coffee.
I was tempted to take home a few more sweets, though I managed to hold back. With the painted saying of "Eat what you love and love what you eat" on the wall, who wouldn't be tempted? They have a couple of bakery cases full of options but they also do special orders.
They offer regular coffee drink specials and they have the equipment to make just about anything you might be hankering for.
There are a couple of small tables, but I got the sense that because of the pandemic, it might be more of a grab and go situation right now. Perhaps you can dine in again once COVID-19 is a thing of the past?
You always know a place is popular, especially in rural Iowa, when there is a bulletin board in the entry full of business cards, job postings, auction listings, and event notices.
There is a lot more to see and do in Cresco, Howard County, and the greater Northeast Iowa area. I'm already looking forward to my next visit. I would definitely pop back in to Dough & Joe when I'm in the area again. And, if your hometown still has a bakery that is churning out delectable sweets and fresh made bread on a regular basis, make sure you are supporting it as many towns across our state can no longer claim such a spot. Cresco, you are fortunate to have a good one.
As always, I welcome your suggestions of places to visit and profile whether in Howard County or any of the other 98 counties in Iowa. If you have a good idea or would like to host the Iowa Adventurer, please drop me a note through this website.
