A recently revitalized building in downtown Sanborn is now the home of a new small business that is specializing in rehabilitating and restoring antique furniture. Reborn Treasures is now a must-stop visit for anyone looking to purchase a new heirloom quality home furnishing at a reasonable price. From desks, tables, and dressers to bars, shelves, and armoires, longtime resident Mary O'Brien with help of her husband Kelly are giving new life to treasures that are becoming stunning additions to their customers' homes or businesses.
The business name is kind of a metaphor for the whole community as Sanborn, a town of about 1400 in O'Brien County in far Northwest Iowa, is seeing some renewed interest in its downtown area and as well as other housing development and business expansion because of the focus of some dedicated community members.
As soon as you walk through the door, you'll be more than pleasantly surprised by the gorgeous lighting and original barrel-style ceiling. It's a vibe you might expect to find in a high end store in an expensive big city neighborhood. Instead, it's in small town Iowa.
The building was in very poor shape when the O'Briens acquired it. However, after some hard work and financial investment, the more-than-a-century-old building is boasting its historic charm.
The showroom is packed from wall to wall with quality refinished or repainted items. I'm always a bit more partisan toward showing the natural wood of furniture, but I know there are plenty of you out there who liked painted furniture.
Mary is often at work in the back of her building, which is home to her workshop, to get newly acquired treasures ready for sale. Thus, the inventory is always changing as pieces are sold and new pieces are 'reborn'. You can check out her website and Facebook page to see updates and the latest inventory. She does a good job listing the dimensions of each piece so you can do some measuring ahead of time to see if the piece you are eyeing will fit.
There is some other decor for sale but the main focus is on the gorgeous furniture.
Even if you are not in the market for something new for yourself or someone else, you can always stop in for a complimentary cup of hot coffee and browse a bit.
Whether you are in the area or willing to drive, make the time to stop in Reborn in Sanborn.
Mary has limited hours (Thursday, Friday and Saturday) but if you call ahead of time, there's a good chance she might be around and can open the store for you. Not to mention, there's a lot of other great stops in and around Sanborn and O'Brien County.
As always, I welcome your suggestions of places to visit and profile whether in O'Brien County or any of the other 98 counties in Iowa. If you have a good idea or would like to host the Iowa Adventurer, please drop me a note through this site.
