Up the road from Okoboji is Montgomery, the only unincorporated town in Dickinson County

June 20, 2018

Despite growing up in Northwest Iowa, I had no idea that Montgomery in Dickinson County even existed until I drove to it.  According to some quick research online, it appears to be another community that popped up because of the expansion of the railroad.

Though it's unincorporated, there are still some homes and a business or two in the community. In fact, my aunt and uncle, who live in nearby Spirit Lake, take their car for servicing and repairs at a mechanic there.

If you are spending some time in and around the Iowa Great Lakes, head off the beaten path a few miles for a visit. That is exactly what I did on a recent Sunday with my brother and cousin.

I don't know if this grain elevator is still used at all for storage, but it has a distinct burnt orange color to it. That's not a color I see very often on a grain elevator these days.

As I mentioned, there is a garage in town that is an operating business.

I also found another building that looked to be a place of commerce, too.

However, there are lots of other spots that have seen better days. This historic brick bank building has been turned into someone's private garage.

This old trailer house is probably only home to critters these days. (Edit: A former resident of Montgomery reached out to let me know that this was actually the elevator office and that he had drank many a bottle of soda there!).

There is an old structure that looks like it might have been a house but also perhaps a church too. Maybe someone locally can weigh in?

When you are near the Iowa Great Lakes, there's always a need for boat or motor home storage. It appears that there is some buildings dedicated to that.

Though, there are plenty parked outside, too.

This vintage Winnebago is sure cool.

This is clearly one of the largest piles of fire wood I've seen. Impressive stockpile!

Here are a few other shots from around town. I spotted a few trucks that are used to haul agricultural commodities. Even though it's near an area of heavy tourism, Iowa's economy is still heavily reliant on agriculture.

Here's an example of a couple houses I saw while driving around.

As always, I welcome your suggestions of places to visit and profile whether in Dickinson County or one of the other 98 counties. If you would wish to host the Iowa Adventurer or have a suggestion, please drop me a note through my website.
