Near Lake Rathbun and the taxpayer owned Honey Creek Resort in northern Appanoose County is the unincorporated community of Iconium. Lake Rathbun and Honey Creek Resort are popular southern Iowa attractions. As a result, it's tough not to drive through the community on your way there or on your way home.
There's not a lot, geographically, to the community these days but that does not mean it's not worthy of paying a visit. On a recent swing through Monroe and Appanoose Counties, the Iowa Adventurer and a friend spent a few minutes wandering about.
On the east side of the town, there is a building with a great mural of cowboys painted on the side.
On the west side of town is a beautiful old United Methodist Church and a neighboring one-room schoolhouse.
Between the mural and the school are a few residences and buildings of varying size and condition.
I spotted a business that appears to be cater to the crowd that would be coming down for the recreational amenities. It looks like they sell bait and other outdoor necessities.
Iowa is dotted with a lot of stops like Iconium. They helped form and shape the Iowa that we have today and though they might be small - they are unique and valuable. You can read a little more about Iconium on the Wikipedia page. Iowa Adventurer truly enjoys visiting these types of places and will continue to do so into the future.
As always, I welcome your suggestions of places to visit and profile whether in Appanoose County or any of the other 98 counties in Iowa. If you have a good suggestion or would like to host the Iowa Adventurer, please drop me a note through my site.
