Decorate with dollars at the Red Barn Saloon and Grille near Lake Rathbun

January 10, 2019

In my travels around the United States, a pub in Charleston, South Carolina known as The Griffon stands out as memorable simply because of the very unique choice of decor on the walls and ceilings. I've been there twice and I always tell people to stop in if they are headed to that particular city. One step inside, it's abundantly clear why that place is cool..it is covered in probably thousands of one dollar bills - many with personalized messages added.

But you don't have to go to South Carolina for that kind of character.

There's a place in Iowa that has the same sense of decorating taste (though maybe not yet to the same extent) and it's called the Red Barn Saloon and Grille.

The business is just as it's name suggests: a large red barn.

On a recent Sunday, as a friend and I were out and about in Monroe and Appanoose Counties, she suggested we pop into this unique country establishment for a few minutes. Located about halfway between Melrose and Iconium on the southwest corner of the Green Acres POA (a housing association), it is mere minutes from Lake Rathbun and the taxpayer owned Honey Creek Resort.

We were the only patrons at the time we arrived, though several others arrived before we left. It was clear that they were also getting ready for the next day's planned New Year's Eve celebration.

Based on the available space, televisions, and other amenities such as a shuffle board, it's obviously a fun and place for both locals and visitors to the nearby lake and resort to gather or host a party.

There's a large sign out front denoting that the current owners are entertaining offers for it's sale.

However, it continues to operate with regular hours.

Next time I'm in the area, I'll definitely make an effort to stop in and try some of their food. If you are going to be in the area in the future, you might wish to stop in for a bite to eat or a cold drink. Perhaps you'll also choose to help the owners out with their decorating...by leaving your own mark via a George Washington.

As always, I welcome your suggestion of places to visit and profile either in Monroe County or any of the other 98 counties in Iowa. If you have a good idea or would like to host the Iowa Adventurer, please drop me a note through this website.
