In Fort Dodge, the atmosphere, art, and aromas make Central Perk worth the visit

February 6, 2019

I'm a heavy consumer of coffee and so whenever I get a suggestion of a good Iowa coffee shop to visit, I'm definitely all ears. In fact, most of the posts written for this very website are written from the confines of a popular coffee shop in Des Moines.

A friend of mine who works in Fort Dodge suggested (I'm always open for suggestions!) that I needed to check out Central Perk and Dessert in the downtown neighborhood of Fort Dodge. Coffee?  Great.  Coffee and dessert?  Even better. Since I was planning to come to Fort Dodge to check out the newly completed and rather incredible silo mural, I thought it would be good to grab a cup of coffee before I headed out to do some other adventures.

On the outside, Central Perk and Dessert just kind of looks like typical one story brick building - not a ton of easily identifiable individual character.

But once inside, you immediately find out why this is quickly becoming one of the best hangouts in the whole town. There is a lot of cozy charm to appreciate. For starters, the walls are filled with art work - much of it done by local artists. A lot of the pieces have price tags on them in case you want to bring something home with your delicious dessert or cup of joe.

Much of the art work is illuminated by some fun lighting.

Central Perk offers free wi-fi and there's a wide array of seating options to enjoy that amenity. Though, if you aren't planning to work on your homework or blog there - it's also just a great place to catch up with an old friend or conduct a business meeting.

As the name suggests, it's not just coffee. They offer a wide array of coffee beverages, sweet desserts, as well as other lunch options.

I didn't try any of the desserts but things looked good. Someone was hard at work in the kitchen making the magic happen.

They roast their own beans and only serve pour over (not drip) coffee so it's definitely a place that is serious about their craft. The two gentlemen working made me a pour over coffee made from recently roasted Ecuadorian beans. It was quite good and warm, something I appreciated after pending time outside in the cold looking at silo art.

Other than art on the walls and different food and beverage options, they also have other items for sale too. From greeting cards to bags and aprons, there were some fun choices to be found.

Central Perk was a nice comfortable stop before heading out on more adventures. They are open six days a week (closed on Sundays) with varying hours. It's clear from their awards and other bulletin posts that they are a great place for the greater Fort Dodge community to gather.

I will look forward to stopping back again and trying some of their desserts or an item from the lunch menu. Hopefully, my next visit will come when it isn't so cold and snowy. In the meantime, check out their Facebook page and give them a like and a follow.

As always, I welcome your suggestions of places to visit and profile whether in Webster County or any of the other 98 counties in Iowa. If you have a good idea or would like to host the Iowa Adventurer, please drop me a note through my website.
