Marking the spot where Iowa, Minnesota, and South Dakota meet

February 27, 2019

The four corners monument - the point where Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, and Colorado meet - is a popular spot for tourists to visit. It's that very rare spot when you can be in four different states at the same time. Those states have much straighter borders. Many of Iowa's borders are rivers and so opportunities for that kind of fun and Instagram worthy multi-state photo are limited.

I said limited. Not non-existent.

There is one spot where Iowa, Minnesota, and South Dakota meet. You can be in three states at essentially the same time. You'll have to head to far northwest Iowa to experience this, but there's a nice marker denoting the spot.

After trekking through Gitchie Manitou State Preserve, I saw a sign near the Grand Falls Casino pointing me to this marker. Grand Falls Casino is one of Iowa's newest casinos and it is literally just barely within the confines of our borders. We are pulling a lot of South Dakota money into our state!

You are barely off the property and there's a "Welcome to Iowa" sign.

A few miles east of the casino, as you travel along a blacktop, you'll encounter this small roadside attraction. There's not a lot to it and if you are not paying attention, you might sail right on by.

It's getting hard to read, but there is a little plaque on it.

The "Annals of Iowa" has a brief but nice overview of this landmark, including some information about it's dedication ceremony. I got a chuckle out of the fact that the locals referred to it as "Old Iron Post". There's additional history about how it's been vandalized over the years.

This is a brief spot - you could probably even keep the car running. However, it's a neat place to be and if you are in the area, you might as well make the brief adventure to go see it.

As always, I welcome your suggestion of places to visit and profile whether in Lyon County or any of the other 98 counties in Iowa. If you have a good idea or would like to host the Iowa Adventurer, please drop me a note through this website.
