Drum up an appetite before visiting Percussion the Restaurant in Osceola

March 12, 2019

At just under two years old, Osceola's Percussion the Restaurant, located off of Highway 34 and not far from I-35, is still relatively new to the state's food scene.

At that relative youth, if they were a band, they might still be opening for some bigger names. But this is a restaurant that is confident of their offerings.

They have been trying to shoot up the charts by urging their fans to nominate them for awards for some of their biggest hits - namely their very delicious hamburgers. In fact, they've been campaigning to get considered in the Iowa Beef Industry Council's Best Burger contest.

Percussion seems like an odd name for a restaurant until you realize that the owners (the Zimmerman family) are - exactly that - percussionists.

From pictures on the wall to a music stand used as the host stand, they wrap the name into the vibe of the place quite nicely.

It's the kind of place that you'll want to drum up a healthy appetite before walking through the doors. On a recent Saturday evening, before heading over to the Clarke County Fairgrounds, for a show pig auction, I gave the place a try.

Since they are playing up their burgers, I had to order one. I enjoyed the Italian stuffed burger, which came with fries and additional fresh vegetable toppings. The Italian includes their custom beef blend stuffed with greatness: pepperoni, ham, sausage and provolone. They then top it with more provolone and bacon. How can you go wrong? You cannot.

However, if you aren't feeling a burger, they have a sizable menu of other options, including dessert. They even also offer a fresh salad bar as an option.

The Zimmerman's used to be part of the management of Northern Lights Pizza, a small chain in the Des Moines area. I hear their commercials on the radio on a near constant basis. I don't think I've actually ever tried it though. They offer a limited menu of Northern Lights' greatest hits in the restaurant, in case you having a hankering for pizza.

There's also a bar area and a menu of various adult beverages as well.

There is a variety of seating options in the nice open dining room space.

I received outstanding service from Anna, one of the waitresses that works there. She was more than happy to tell me all about the restaurant and I could tell she really enjoyed working there. If you are in the Osceola area, stopping into Percussion would not be a bad idea.

They are open every day of the week except Mondays. I believe they are open every other Sunday for brunch. My server Anna highly recommended the baked French toast.

There's other things to do and see around the area and I look forward to getting back to do a bit more adventuring in the near future.

As they say on their website, "Food never sounded this good." They have managed to keep a steady beat providing the kinds of classics that keep the hungry locals clamoring for more. I certainly wish them well in their campaign to be recognized as Iowa's best burger. It certainly was tasty.

As always, I welcome your suggestions of places to visit and profile whether in Clarke County or any of the other 98 counties in Iowa. If you have a good idea or would like to host the Iowa Adventurer, please drop me a note through this website.
