Deb's Corner Cafe serves up home-style favorites in historic downtown Manning

April 18, 2019

After a Saturday morning of adventures, which included driving from West Des Moines to Auburn to check out The Little Green Truck Coffee Company, visiting Mount Carmel, and stopping at the amazing I O W A sculpture in Manning, I had worked up a bit of an appetite. A quick search of restaurants in Manning suggested that I could find a quality meal at Deb's Corner Cafe in the historic downtown district and so that is exactly where I headed.

That turned out to be a very good decision.

Deb's Corner Cafe, located in a historic building on a corner in downtown Manning, offers up the kind of no-frills home-style cooking that you would come to expect at any good mom and pop cafe in rural Iowa.

I saw online that they apparently serve up a pretty good breaded pork tenderloin. That was what I was planning to order until I noticed on this particular day that they were offering a hot beef special. I'm rarely one to turn down a cafe's daily special.

It was a delicious pile of homemade potatoes, fresh bread, and tender roast beef all smothered in homemade gravy. It was probably more calories than I needed but it was definitely filling.

Other patrons were ordering off their modest menu. It's not unlike any other cafe menu you'd find elsewhere in rural Iowa. The prices are also very reasonable.

There's nothing too flashy about the interior of the place, which adds to the cozy character of the place. There's a fair amount of tables.

However, there is a pair of longer counters that are in front of a huge wall-sized mirror.

There's also a number of booths that are sectioned off with antique wood bench partitions. These are quite beautiful.

There's some beautiful and ornate metal ceiling panels and even some of the woodwork includes nice elements, such as stained glass.

You pay for your meal up at the cash register near the entrance to the kitchen. I like that you can buy the local paper or an Our Iowa magazine there too.

Near the entrance to the cafe is a bulletin board which includes community announcements and other information. I am very glad to see they are supporters of 4-H.

They are also clearly proud of their local IKM-Manning high school students.

I noticed they also received an award a few years ago from the Main Street Iowa program for their facade improvements. Manning is one of the communities in Iowa that participates in this program and their Executive Director regularly reaches out to Iowa Adventurer with updates about the town.

As you can see, the front of the cafe looks very nice and it let's in a lot of natural light.

I know there are other restaurants to dine at in Manning and so I have plenty of reasons to get back to town to try those. That said, Deb's offers great service, reasonable prices, and a menu that is sure to satisfy any appetite. It was a great spot to fuel up for many more hours of afternoon and evening adventures.

As always, I welcome your suggestions of places to visit and profile whether in Carroll County or any of the other 98 counties in Iowa. If you have a good idea or would like to host the Iowa Adventurer, please drop me a note through this website.
