Featuring elements of the community, Clarion's sharp new mural will turn heads

July 15, 2019

In Clarion, generous donors and community boosters recently commissioned noted muralist Ben Schuh of Des Moines to paint a mural featuring elements of the community.

In recent weeks, Schuh finished painting a similar type mural in downtown Des Moines.

Clarion's mural is located on a downtown building that has a southern wall running parallel to Highway 3. The building is also near the beautiful and historic Wright County Courthouse.

Iowa Adventurer spent some time in Wright County earlier this year and learned of fundraising efforts to make this mural a reality. I was invited back to the community recently to check out the mural and to attend a backyard celebration / meet the artist event. It was held at the home of hospital CEO Steve Simonin and guests included donors, community leaders, the artist, and his wife.

Elements featured in the mural include notable aspects of Clarion. For example, you can spot a Hagie sprayer, the one-room schoolhouse where the 4-H emblem was created, Lake Cornelia, the courthouse, wind turbines, fields of crops, and more.

A few other stories or posts have been written about the project and I'd encourage you to give those a read. It's refreshing to see a community like Clarion come together for a project like this. It does help to market the town and creates an "Insta-worthy" backdrop for visitors and residents a-like.

I'm not saying every town needs a flashy mural, but it serves as a good example of something positive that can happen when a town and its leaders are working together to build some momentum. The next time you are driving through Clarion on Highway 3, be sure to stop by and check it out for yourself. For those that will discover it driving by, it will certainly turn some heads.

As always, I welcome your suggestion of places to visit and profile whether in Wright County or any of the other 98 counties in Iowa. If you have a good idea or would like to host the Iowa Adventurer, please drop me a note through this website.
